This thing I do called Nerd Soiree

In February 2011 I founded a community called Nerd Soiree with the help of Jen Flitter and a couple of close friends. It’s a group of developers, creatives, designers and marketers with two things in common; we’re female and we love the internet. We’ve been meeting every month at various locations around Auckland city to talk about our work, our passions and how we an help each other out in a largely male dominated industry. “It’s a social network, in real life.”

We’re definitely not anti-men. It’s just having a female only environment means people are a lot more comfortable and open, so strangers become friends a lot quicker. There’s no business-card swapping or awkward handshakes, just genuinely lovely conversations.

Nerd Soiree meets at 6.30pm on the 15th of every month, at various locations around Auckland City. Sometimes at a newly opened bar or at a business that’s happy to provide free drinks in exchange from the genuine word of mouth generated about their products. Nerd Soiree has grown to be far bigger than I intended and it’s exciting thinking about the possibilities for the group and the people who come along!

We’ve even been getting a bit of press like this article in Idealog magazine.
