Nazis on the dark side of the moon
I loved Iron Sky. Fuck everyone giving it 1/5 star reviews! I’ve been looking forward to this movie for so long, I slept through two screenings at SXSW in March and was so angry with myself!
At the end of the day it’s a B-Grade parody of current politics and popular culture. There were several moments of the movie where everyone in the cinema was LOLing. There’s also a subplot about American technology VS. German engineering, where of course Apple devices are hailed as mankind’s greatest invention. The irony being that IRL the USA govt recruited Nazi scientists in Operation Paperclip and some say it was German science that pushed America forward (ie. to the moon in 1969). I don’t know enough about it so I’ll just direct you to this Wikipedia article. Another great irony/ abomination was the moon-Nazi scientist looks just like Albert Einstein. I’m sure the Nazi loathing US citizen would hate his role in the film.
The conspiracy theories about Nazis on the moon have always intrigued me. Perhaps because it’s all based on their exploration of Antartica and no one ever talks about the Third Reich coming down to our hemisphere. Iron Sky was always going to appeal to me on that level. If you know nothing of these theories do a quick Google search for “Nazi UFOs” and you will find tons of highly-factual, extremely-convincing arguments that suggest Nazis really did make it to the moon.
If you take the movie for what it is and don’t expect too much from it you will probably really enjoy it as I did. I’m hoping the next generation will love it as much as us kids love Dr. Strangelove. High hopes perhaps.
